Chapter Five

Lucas was just finishing giving his report to the next shift’s nurse when Kaleb came running into the ER. As soon as Lucas saw him, he knew something had happened to Matt. All Lucas had to do was glance at the harried, worried expression on Kaleb’s face to know that. It was a look that Lucas knew too well, because he had seen it all too often working in the emergency services—Kaleb was about to announce some bad news to a loved one and he wasn’t looking forward to it.

As soon as Kaleb reached him Lucas didn’t bother with the hi-how-are-ya’s he just said, “What happened and is he still alive.”

“He’s fine…or at least he is now.”

Lucas was so relieved that he grabbed the nearby counter for support. Matt wasn’t dead. Gratitude washed over Lucas, and at that moment all he wanted to do was find Matt and hold on to him and never let him go.

“Is he hurt? If so, then why haven’t they brought him in?” Lucas demanded, his heart still racing.

They could have taken him to the other hospital across town. The one that was renowned for their burn treatments. If Matt was bad enough to have been taken there, then it could mean that he didn’t have long to live. Most people didn’t survive extensive burning. They usually died from infection or shock within days.

“No, he’s fine and at home waiting for you. All he needed was some oxygen on scene and a bit of treatment for a small second degree burn to his right arm. We tried to talk him into coming here as a precaution, but he said it wasn’t necessary. I just came here to give you a head’s up, so you wouldn’t freak out, when you saw him.”

“How did he get near the fire in the first place?” Lucas asked.

“He went into a nearby garage to save a cat and while he was in there, the fire jumped and consumed the building he was in.”

Lucas let out an incredulous laugh. “He almost died because of a cat?”

Kaleb shrugged. “What can I say? It’s Matt. You know how he is.”

Yes, Lucas did, and it sounded exactly like something Matt would do. That still didn’t mean that Lucas wasn’t going to chew his ass out when he saw him, though. Just the thought of how close he’d come to losing Matt made Lucas shake from head to toe.

“Hey, you okay?” Kaleb asked. “You look awfully pale.”

“No, I’m not. I need to go home. I need to see him.”

Lucas rushed to the locker room and grabbed his stuff. When he got back, he was surprised to find Kaleb still there.

“What are you doing?” Lucas asked.

“Driving you home,” Kaleb said. “I don’t know if you drove yourself here or not, but either way, you’re not in any condition to drive. So, let’s go.”

Lucas followed Kaleb out. The short drive home was quiet. All Lucas could think of was how close he’d come to losing Matt. How his life would have been destroyed had Matt died.
